Writers have teased about Mayans MC/Sons of Anarchy Crossover Characters during Season 2
When Mayans M.C. premiered a year ago, creator Kurt Sutter siad he didn’t want to “ruin the mythology” that he had created on Sons of Anarchy with crossover characters, even though the two shows were so closely intertwined.
How it really happened
At first, Sutter was true to his word, for the most part. However, he did find some very creative ways to blend the two shows using character crossovers. It can be said that without Sons of Anarchy there is no Mayans M.C.
Except for Emilio Rivera‘s role as Marcus Alvarez, a role Rivera played throughout Sons of Anarchy’s seven season run, and Chucky Marston – the former sexual deviant/accountant for Teller/Morrow, Sutter managed to keep the two shows separate. Well, that is, aside from a cameo appearance from Sutter’s real life wife Katey Sagal, in a newly created “flashback” playing Gemma Teller at the begining of the series, a visit from US Assistant Attorney Lincoln Potter midway through the series, and leaving us with the HUGE reveal/cliffhanger that Happy Lowman (played by David Labrava) may have had a hand in the murder of EZ and Angel Reyes’ mother, Marisol.
Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) was the well respected leader of the Mayans right up until the very end of Season 1, when he stepped down to work for The Galindo cartel. He ensured that the club did everything right and made sure EZ got the full Prospect experience. Clearly, this decision will affect Alvarez’s story in Season 2 and how he relates to the remaining Mayans. Obviously, in compliance with his contract, Rivera has been tight lipped about his character’s journey during Season 2.
As you might recall, Happy was a recurring character throughout the Sons of Anarchy series and even acted as ‘Sergeant of Arms’ during Jax Teller’s presidency. The mystery behind crossover character Happy’s involvement in the murder of Marisol Reyes will be a major plot point during Mayans M.C. Season 2. Labrava will spend a great amount of time with the Mayans MC charter on the Mexico/California border.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Elgin James joked that Happy will be killed off in Episode 3, when asked if they planned to “whack” any legacy characters from ‘Sons of Anarchy’. He later went on to say that “Working with D.L. has been amazing, you’re going to see a lot of Happy this season because there’s a lot of stuff to unpack. I can’t say where it ends because we’re still figuring it out, but you can expect to spend a lot of time with the character this season.”
Assistant U.S Attorney Lincoln Potter Crossover
Another past ‘Sons of Anarchy’ character who played a major role in Season 1 of ‘Mayans M.C.’ is Assistant U.S. Attorney Lincoln Potter. He was a thorn in the side of SAMCRO during Season 4 of Sons of Anarchy. Potter returned during Season 1 of ‘Mayans M.C.’ and plotted against the Galindo cartel. We later discover that he is also the one pulling the strings on EZ Reyes once he became an informant in a deal to be released early from prison.
Eventually, Potter changed the rules when he teamed up with Miguel Galindo. All the while he was using EZ and Angel to handle his “dirty work.” Something we will see much more of this season. Potter will be a major player in Season 2 of ‘Mayans M.C.’ when the show returns Sept. 3.
“He’s always going to be an agent of chaos,” James said about Potter. “He’s always going to come with his little whirlwind, and he still has a hold over the boys. Last season was about secrets. This season is about retribution…But it may be on some people who might surprise you, not the ones you’re rooting to get theirs.”
A couple of legacy Sons of Anarchy members will be mentioned in the ‘Mayans M.C’ season 2 debut. These “honorable mentions” could set up more crossovers in the future. Co-creater Kurt Sutter finally admits that it would be “disingenuous” to the story he wrote for his hit series Sons of Anarchy not to intercede with what’s happening in ‘Mayans M.C.’ considering the two worlds are so closely connected.
Sutter reminds us that, especially close to the end of Sons of Anarchy, Jax was “laying down the law in terms of what he wanted the club to do…” One of those things was handing off the guns to Alvarez and the Mayans. “We’ll continue to see that play out,” Sutter explains.
Will Nero Crossover?
One character not yet mentioned as a possible crossover with very close ties to the Mayans on ‘Sons of Anarchy’ is Nero Padilla (Jimmy Smits) part-time pimp/part time gangster. Although he has not yet been offered a cameo role on ‘Mayans M.C.’,
“Kurt is very into the lore of the show in terms of Sons and its influence,” Smits said. “I would absolutely love to come back into that world. Sure, I can pop in!” He also says that he feels like they’re doing a great job and was pleasantly surprised to see so many Sons characters making appearances on Mayans. “I’ve been watching the show, I love it.” said Smits.
What about the Teller boys?
One major problem with revisiting Smit’s character as Nero is that it would force explainations about what became of Jax Teller’s sons. You might recall, at the end of Sons of Anarchy, Nero left Charming with Jax’s ex-wife, Wendy and the two small boys and headed for his Uncle’s farm to raise the Teller boys far away from the life of crime their father led.
“We bring it up a lot in the writers’ room, about bringing Nero back,” James said. “I think the only problem with that is that his appearance will bring up the topic of Jax’s kids. So there’s more to unpack there in the mythology as to where they are now. Every time we go there, Kurt reacts but then he sidesteps. “It’s not off the table, and I’d love to work with Jimmy. When we consider bringing someone back, we have to think about the ripple effect it’ll cause and what it all means…”
Jax Teller Crossover in the Future?
Since Sutter first announced his plan to create Mayans MC Charlie Hunnam fans have dreamed of once again seeing Jax Teller on their TV screens. You might remember that Jax died at the end of Sons of Anarchy. With that said, he would not be alive two or three years later during the spin-off Mayans MC. However, Jax’s death does not completely eliminate the possibility of Hunnam making a crossover cameo in future seasons. I mean, we DID see newly created “flashbacks” of Gemma during Season 1 of Mayans MC, who we are reminded died before Jax did!
Unlike Sons of Anarchy, Mayans MC has already used flashbacks in its storytelling. This opens the door for almost any Sons of Anarchy character to make an appearance on the show. Emelio Rivera would love nothing more than to see Hunnam back in action.
Recently Rivera stated that he would “love” to work with Hunnam again and that co-creaters Elgin James and Kurt Sutter seem “open” to airing flashbacks when possible on Mayans MC. None of this means that Hunnam will be back for sure, but it definitely leaves a door open.
“That would be really cool to work with Charlie again. That’d be great. I love Charlie, man. I don’t see why that couldn’t happen. Because they’re doing flashbacks already; I mean, they have had them. On Sons, we never had a flashback. I don’t think Kurt liked the flashbacks, but now we’re putting them in.” said Rivera during a recent interview. “Me, I like flashbacks, you dig what I’m saying? stated Rivera. “That kind of brings that universe back to ours, and it’s kind of cool. And rightfully so, because they’re part of our world. We’re part of theirs, and they could be part of ours.”
Are more crossover suprises in store?
Charlie hunnam has made no mention of any planned appearance on Sutter’s new series. But, one never knows. Since Sutter loves to keep fans guessing, it’s impossible to imagine that there won’t be at least a few surprises during Season 2 of Mayans M.C. with regard to crossovers with Sons of Anarchy characters. Considering that we had no idea Lincoln Potter or Happy Lowman were on deck! It was never even teased! It is entirely possible that another major crossover is already being planned. However, in typical Sutter fashoin, he’s not letting get out until the episodes air.
Mayans M.C. stars Edward James Olmos, JD Pardo, Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo, Emily Tosta, Joseph Raymond Lucero, and Carla Baratta. Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter serves as an executive producer as well as co-creator, along with Elgin James. Season 2 of Mayans M.C. debuts on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at 10 p.m. on FX.
