Mayans M.C. – Season 1, Episode 10: “Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul” RECAP

Mayans M.C. – Season 1, Episode 10: “Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul”

Mayans M.C. – Season 1, Episode 10: “Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul”

Perro/Cuervo Opening

As episode 10 Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul opens, we see EZ passing by the carcas of the dead dog from Episode 1 Perro/OC, which now has a couple of crows (Cuervo) eating it’s carcass. In typical Sutter fashion, we later discover, as always, that the “animal” signify’s something to come.

We were all surprised by the big reveal at the end of the episode. All season long, EZ has been searching for the person or persons who killed his mother. Well, we found out this week, and it was a doozy!

We all know that the crow (Cuervo) is a longstanding symbol of Sons of Anarchy’s SAMCRO. Now we realize that the dog featured in Episode 1 is EZ’s spirit animal. Watching those Cuervo peck at the dead dog not so subtly translates to SAMCRO “eating” at EZ. Now it all makes sense.

Angel and the Rogue Mayans

At the casino, Angel (Clayton Cardenas), Gilly (Vincent Vargas), and Coco (Richard Cabral) head off after their post-meeting party. They see a little less of the carcass on their way. There is now only a single crow left to feast on the Perro. (Notice the foreshadowing)

Dita’s Discovery

Dita (Ada Maris) finds her dead son’s hospital records, left out by Miguel (Danny Pino). The cartel boss knows she only did it because he isn’t like his father. Didn’t stop him from letting Adelita (Carla Baratta) chop Devante’s head off. And more than ever, Emily (Sarah Bolger) supports her husband, as the lines between wife and accomplice blur further.

EZ reveals the “task” Potter gave the Reyes brothers

During Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul, EZ goes to see Felipe (Edward James Olmos). He fills dad in on Potter’s (Ray McKinnon) favour. He and Angel (Clayton Cardenas) have been tasked with the assassination of their cousin, DEA agent Kevin Jimenez (Maurice Compte). Kevin threatened to become a “whistle–blower” against the DEA. Now, Potter isnsists he be “dealt with.” What is EZ to do? If he doesn’t fulfill the request, he will go back to jail. Felipe advises EZ that they will find another way.

At the Table

At the table, Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) tells Bishop (Michael Irby) and the club he feels things will go well with the cartel and the rebels’ deal, as well as everything planned to make the feds think Galindo is working fully with them. Alvarez tells the charter that he wants to “keep his promise to Jax Teller” concerning the drugs that were causing chaos through Charming. The Charter votes and approves. Alvarez tells them that it’s good that they agreed, because the Redwood lads are already on the way down to mule some guns for the rest of the deal.

Kevin Pays Felipe a Visit

At Felipe’s requerst, Kevin goes to see Felipe at the butcher shop. We see the old man struggle while considering killing his nephew. Felipe is consumed with trying to save his son, to the point he has contemplated doing the unthinkable himself. He chooses not to do it, at least not right now. When Jimenez asks what is bothering Felipe, he tells Jimenez that he is just struggling with the whole mess with Angel and EZ.

Angel visit’s Felipe

A little later in Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul, Angel turns up at dad’s shop looking for a way to get in touch with Kevin. Felipe admits what he nearly did, then tells his son this isn’t the way out. The eldest brother just wants to help get EZ out of the club and out of town.

“He doesn’t belong here, with me, in this dead fucking town.” Angel says to Felipe Reyes.

Meanwhile, Potter keeps an eye on the prospect to make sure his and the DEA’s loose ends are all tied up.

Angel visits the Jimenez House

And so Angel goes to Kevin’s house. As Jimenez opens the door, Angel pulls a gun on him. A probelme arises when Angel doesn’t know that Kevin’s former boss Bowen (Curtiss Cook) is there. Chaos erupts, ending with both the DEA men murdered— Bowen by EZ, and Jimenez at the hands of his cousin Angel.

Potter Visits the Scene

Afterwards, Potter comes over to survey the less than “ninja–level” situation. He says that despite the mess things will go fine.

He says that the line between “avarice and Executive Order” have been erased in this current U.S. administration, making it easier than ever to do sketchy things. Potter’s return in this series seems to be the complete opposite of his character in Sons of Anarchy. He was at least attempting to do things in the name of justice then, only now to become no different than the men he’s hunting.

In typical Potter fashion, he “inquires” whether the Reyes brother believe the pie to be “homemade or store bought” and proceeds to “sample” it as the brothers proceed to wrap the bodies for removal.

At the Galindo Compound

Back at the compound, Miguel tells his right hand man Nestor (Gino Vento) to take a seat, he says they need to talk. He tells Nestor that he feels the slaughtering of the nun was lacking in “vision” and that he needs someone with a better understanding of what he wants. He tells Nestor that he will remain head of the family’s security, but that he has retained other help for the business’ security. Will this cause problems for the boss later? Will Nestor remain loyal?

EZ and Angel have to get the corpses of the DEA men someplace proper. Along their journey in the tunnels they talk about their cousin. EZ doesn’t have much memory of Kevin from earlier days, though Angel has a less than stellar family memory to share, illustrating the cycles of violence these men have endured throughout their lives— from institutional violence to family violence to the plain ole street violence and organised crime they see in their chosen line of work.

Once the bodies are buried, Angel Orders EZ to quit the club then hit the road.

Angel Visits Adelita

Angel proceeds to drop EZ back at the enterance to the tunnel and goes to check on Adelita/Louisa. Adelita asks Angel to take a walk with her. He kisses her on her forhead and prepares to leave.

Adelita asks Angel if he would like to spend the night. Angel responds with ” I’d love to stay, but on a night when I am not hating myself as much as I do tonight.”

EZ’s Past is Erased

Pleased that EZ had held up his end of the bargain, Potter made good on his part of the deal, as well: He made a quick and cryptic phone call to the DEA, and just like that, all of the agency’s files on EZ were wiped as though they never existed at all. EZ watches as his criminal history evaporates onscreen. That doesn’t mean he’s entirely free. The attorney tells EZ, for disposing of one problem alongside Bowen’s death: “You owe me one.” Can’t bode well for future plans.

Angel Gets Promoted

Back at the clubhouse it’s a celebration! The club’s moving on to big things, and Angel’s got himself the new title of Secretary to the Mayans M.C.

Club Business

Then it’s time for EZ to speak with Bishop, who’s sitting down with Alvarez, Taza (Raoul Trujillo), and Hank (Frankie Loyal Delgado). But is he really going to leave?   Looks more like it’s Alvarez departing the Mayans, as he takes off his cut, leaving it at the table before heading off from the clubhouse. Where’s he headed? To work for Miguel and the cartel as the new consigliere.

EZ’s New Deal

And what did EZ talk about with Bishop? The MC President tells Angel “blood can‘t sponsor blood,” so they’re going to have fix their charter. The prospect asked for Bishop to sponsor him instead of his brother! This is going to cause serious repercussions going forward. He and Angel are already not doing well. Angel confronts him, but, EZ says he has to make his own decisions and try living his own life. He wants to do something other than merely survive for once. Angel is NOT happy with this decision!

He tells Angel “If you’re going to blow me up, blow me up. If you’re going to rat me out, rat me out.”

A Happy Reunion?

In the meantime, the Reapers arrive, as none other than Happy Lowman (David Labrava) from the Sons of Anarchy comes to party with his pals. Things go sideways once EZ helps an SOA prospect with some beer.

He remembers following the guy who killed his mom, leading to his accidental shooting of a cop, and that guy who killed his mom is the SOA prospect’s sponsor: Happy.

The finale, “Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul,” written by Kurt Sutter and directed by Elgin James, reveals the “answer” to one of the season’s big mysteries: the murder of Marisol Reyes. Marisol’s death has been what has driven her widower Felipe (Edward James Olmos) and two surviving sons Angel (Clayton Cardenas) and Ezekiel (JD Pardo). Murdered several years before the events of todays Mayans MC, EZ’s mother’s death led him on a quest to find and punish her killer. This quest is what landed him in jail for nearly a decade, when he accidentally shot a police officer while in pursuit of the real killer.

David Labrava’s Re-emergence

Ever since, EZ has wondered who killed his mother. The finale puts him face-to-face with the triggerman. That triggerman is none other than Happy Lowman, the Sons of Anarchy character played by David Labrava.

David Labrava is said to be a real-life Hells Angel who did serve as technical adviser throughout Sons’ run. Labrava made his debut as Happy in the Sons of Anarchy pilot. He also appeared in four additional episodes of season one and was featured in every single subsequent season. He was a recurring player from seasons three through six, and was a series regular for Sons’ final season. Happy Lowman was a Nomad, a killer for hire and lethal enforcer. He rode from coast to coast looking for a place to belong, before finally settling down with SAMCRO. By the end of the series Happy was promoted to Sergeant-at-Arms.  In short,  Happy is as big a deal within the Sons of Anarchy universe, as is the man who plays him.

Not so “Happy” Reunion

Sons of Anarchy’s Happy (David LaBrava) showed up as the BIG cameo of the season at the end of the episode. It was a joyous reunion for about five minutes. The SOA Prospect asked the Mayans Prospect for some “better beers, like Heineken or Millier. As EZ was about to deliver him some beers, Happy turned toward him and his face jogged EZ’s memory. Happy was the one running from EZ in the flashbacks we’ve been seeing all season. It looks like it was Happy who killed EZ’s mom.

Many questions emerge in light of Happy’s role in murdering EZ Reyes’ mother. The biggest one being, WHY? No matter what the specifics are of Happy’s role in the death of Marisol Reyes, there’s no question that it brings Mayans MC and Sons of Anarchy “closer” into one another’s orbit than they have ever been before.

The episode ended before we could get any real details on the whats, whys and hows. But, one thing is clear, at the very least SAMCRO enforcer Happy was involved in the murder of EZ’s mother. Worst case, it was a hit ordered by SAMCRO. Given the Mayans’ new guns deal with SAMCRO, that has the potential to complicate everything. Happy is now going to be integral to the success of the club. Hopefully we will find out what he was doing, why he was doing it, who he was working for and who hired him. I am of the opinion that it dates back to something that Ignatio (Felipe) did in his life prior to assuming his new identity.

But that wasn’t even the craziest thing to happen in Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul.

Lincoln Potter

There was another big Sons of Anarchy intersection that kicked off a few episodes ago: the return of Lincoln Potter. Potter was such a unique and odd character, really operating on a different plane. I can understand how a guy who was upended by Jose Galindo becoming obsessed and throwing himself into the current Galindo Family. It seems he became the Justice Department’s guy on the inside and became the master of the thing that undermined him. An actor like Ray can make all of that stuff happen and bring it to life. This is not a world where people talk a lot, but Potter is a character who loves to talk. He uses words like weapons as he has done so plentifully in Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul.

Fulfilling Lincoln’s (Ray McKinnon) demands in order to get all records of his deal and misdeeds erased, EZ (or Angel) shot and killed Kevin (Maurice Compte). One of them also took out Kevin’s former boss Agent Bowen (Curtiss Cook), who just so happened to be at Kevin’s house chit chatting over a pie.

EZ Gets a New Sponsor

If all of that wasn’t enough, EZ ignored Angel’s (Clayton Cardenas) demands that he leave the M.C.  EZ instead convinced Bishop (Michael Irby) to take over as his sponsor, citing a conflict of interest with his brother. That will be a good move for Bishop. He has been underused this season, and this will put him front and center next season.

Alvarez Quits!

But, there is more! In another complete surprise, Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) took off his cut and left the club to work as counsel to Miguel (Danny Pino). (WHAT???) We are still unclear about the WHY, but his departure sets up the possibility of a war between SAMCRO and the Mayans in Season 2.  Alvarez would have been the one to diffuse any beef between the clubs because of his history with the reapers and the promises he made along the way. I did NOT see this one coming! Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul has certinaly been a mindblower!

Wrap Up

The finale accomplished a lot. However, we didn’t get the major death we were expecting. Fans received something even better! We were left with an overwhelming sense of excitment and a serious craving for Season 2 to get started!  Also, we know that Mayans M.C. is renewed for Season 2. However, FX has not yet announced a premiere date.
